ART
PRISON
In this idyllic context, the extension for the Castello di Santa Caterina seeks to sublimate the natural features of the site. It levitates and keeps the distance with the rock mass in order to reveal its presence. The purity of the architectural shape articulates existing elements: the castle, rocks and the landscape - and creates a high contrast between them. During the climbing to the castle four pavilions of growing size establish relaxing halts allowing to admire the sights and works of art.
Before arriving at private areas, hotels or artist ateliers, a route following the irregularities of the fortress will guide through the landscape, assisting the perpetual dialogue between the rocks and the sky, the land and the sea, the castle and the exodus. Once entered inside the room, the gaze plunge towards the horizon of the Mediterranean Sea before being confronted with the fortress again, through the patio of the first level.
Main exhibition spaces are concentrated in two existing buildings. The adjacent building becomes the biggest vertical space bringing visitors to the roof. A mighty concrete bridge gives a direct access to the main exhibition floor where a succession of patios animates the museum path inside the fortress. The tour culminates with two terraces and upper belvedere which crowns the Island of Favignana.
